Hi Keith,
I have JVC GR-DVP9, which is small and designed to be used with either
hand. That's the newest model with 2Mpixel stills and I bought it for
=A3760. I beleive that you can find older models of the same range cheaper
now. You don't need still camera in it because it's nowhere near
standalone digital cameras.
I presume that you want DV recorder, not analogue.

Looking for suggestions for a reasonably cheap camcorder.

Preferably something that can be operated with the left hand.

Dont want top of the range or fully feature packed because photography
is
not my area of specialism as you will know if you have seen any of my
photos
:-)

Just want a basic camcorder that gives decent pictures.
