RE: Building / Planning Regs.

Rather than move, we did some work to our house... it was a bungalow, built
circa 1970 with a single garage 'attached' (ie on the side of the house,
with an integral door.

We changed the garage into a new kitchen and built a bay window where the
original car entrance door was.

As I recall, the changes we had to make were:

Flat roof - had to be replaced with a tiled pitched roof.
Although the exterior wall was double brick, there was no insulation between
the brick courses... we put a stud wall with insulation down that exterior
wall (I think this was a recommendation, rather than a requirement).
We needed to dig up the concrete floor anyway to put in the soil pipes etc,
so had to ensure that the vapour membrane was made good and that polystyrene
insulation was put in before the concrete.
Planning stated the change of use (we were building a new double garage, so
there was not an issue over loss of garage space / more cars on the road).
There was already a window in the garage, so in conjunction with the new bay
window, we had adequate light (bay window has a lead 'lid' rather than being
tiled.

If you want more info, you can email me off list.

Hi All

It looks like a move to a new house may happen in the near future. However
all the houses swmbo likes have an integral garage, which in her opinion
is a waste of space. So :

1) How easy is it to convert said garage into a room (and node0 of course)
2) What are the planning regs like on this, since it's not an extension,
more a change of use.

Obviously I could talk to the planning office but they're shut right now.

Cheers

Stuart
