A trick I use is to have a bunch of RJ45 plugs with one pair looped.. so I
have a blue loop, orange loop, green and brown.

I keep the four of them on a keyring, so I can plug them all into the
faceplate end, (one in each socket) and be able to identify which is which
back at the patch panel with a multimeter.

crude, but very effective.
