aashram,

It depends on the Grade of the listing, but I'd be surprised if you were
allowed to materially affect the appearance of the roof, i.e. by putting an
AC unit up there.

Speak to your Council's planning officer - they'll be able to give you a
definitive answer, and tell you if you need planning permission (almost
certainly required) and whether you need specific "listed building
contractors" to perform the work.
