Yes and No...... by that I mean you could take it apart, backup to
another hard drive etc, and put it back together, either with the
warranty seal still intact (I've opened mine probably around 20 times
and the seal is still intact !!!!) or removing the seal completely -
some of the recon boxes used for swaps apparently come without warranty
stickers on them.

For *maximum* safety, don't open it - use the manual method of recording
with a vcr/ taking digital photos while scrolling through your season
pass list, and archive anything you want off to vcr.... not pretty, and
labour intensive once you get the new one, but safest.

But there's a high chance that if you open it and don't b0rk anything
up, they won't bat an eyelid..... it's your call!

Interesting timing! Sounds like it's probably the hard drive, so doing
the upgrade would've sorted it anyway without a swap out.
