Thanks - I'd forgotten all about beowulf. I even know a couple of
people capable of setting it up for me :-)

Having thought about this overnight, the multiple-VOB nature of most
DVDs means that some semi-automated (shell-script-level) distributing
over a cluster, one PC per VOB might parallelise things a bit.

handle distributive processing.
