IBM Hard Drive Failure

Not my week for self destructing hard disks, I have a 40gig IBM deskstar
that has gone tits up in one of my desktops.

I am trying to use the IBM Drive fitness software from the IBM website to
see if I can receover anything, problem being it reports a number of bad
clusters and starts to go about fixing them and all of a sudden the
software
throws a wobbly and kicks me back to the DOS prompt

Anyone got any experience of this software and how to get results?

The drive currently Fails the SMART test at boot up and then the machine
reports either a missing boot disk or read error when trying to boot XP.

Would erasing the boot sector help me here?

Open to any suggestions that don't involve taking it apart (under warranty)
or paying 600quid to a data recovery company!!

thank god for 3year warranites!!!!!!

Paul
