Title: Message
I
am
about to put UTP CAT5E cable for IR distribution, and it was mentioned
before
that it's O.K.
Now,
you say that it can have problems.
Can
someone clarify? Preferrably someone who has it installed at
home.

The
alarm cable will be OK for short runs (<5m) but it sounds like you're
looking at a whole house and I suggest you need to use a screened cable for
that since the IR signals are unbalanced and so will pick up hum and
interference over anything other than short runs. You should keep the IR
cables well away (10cm) from mains and data cables.
I
have heard people having success using UTP for IR distribution but I
thought twisted pairs were only good for differential/balanced signals like
100/10 base-T. Either they got lucky or I'm wrong - anyone care to
clarify?
Edward
I have a SLINK-E with
IR
Expansion and from here I want to distribute to Xantec connecting blocks
in
various locations what is the best cable to run for this ( is alarm
cable
suitable ? ) Thanks for the
advice
