Title: Message
I am about to put UTP CAT5E cable for IR distribution, and it was mentioned before that it's O.K.
Now, you say that it can have problems.
Can someone clarify? Preferrably someone who has it installed at home.

The alarm cable will be OK for short runs (<5m) but it sounds like you're looking at a whole house and I suggest you need to use a screened cable for that since the IR signals are unbalanced and so will pick up hum and interference over anything other than short runs. You should keep the IR cables well away (10cm) from mains and data cables.

I have heard people having success using UTP for IR distribution but I thought twisted pairs were only good for differential/balanced signals like 100/10 base-T. Either they got lucky or I'm wrong - anyone care to clarify?
