Re: IR Distribution ( What Cable )

Title: Message
Hi,

I don't know the IR expansion, but you can use any cable for baseband signal. For me, around 50m of alarm shielded cable is good enough to transmit the signal from the PC to the IR transmitter, but the modulation with 38KHz carrier si done on the transciever side.
I'll try in the next day with the modulated signal to see if it stilll works, after Infrared Remote Manager will be compatible with TxD based IR transceiver, means that the carrier will be software generated.

The alarm cable will be OK for short runs (<5m) but it sounds like you're looking at a whole house and I suggest you need to use a screened cable for that since the IR signals are unbalanced and so will pick up hum and interference over anything other than short runs. You should keep the IR cables well away (10cm) from mains and data cables.

I have heard people having success using UTP for IR distribution but I thought twisted pairs were only good for differential/balanced signals like 100/10 base-T. Either they got lucky or I'm wrong - anyone care to clarify?
