Re: Somewhat OT: Large backups

I'd originally thought of doing something similar, mirroring the files
to a machine in the garage, until my wife pointed out that the humidity in there would probably kill a computer within days! But I don't want to mirror to a machine in the same building, as this does not protect me
>from messages, and I don't need protection from disk failure as I am using
RAID. Of course, this is just being paranoid, but I figure backing up at all is a recognition that the worst might happen, and there's no point
half-protecting yourself if you are worried about it. Bit like taking
off the condom half-way through, in a way....

DVD-+R(W)? looks interesting at recent prices, but it does require you to make the effort to change the disk on a regular basis, and I am a
realist about how quickly I would stop bothering. Plus, it's still going to take _a_lot_ of DVDs to backup 100s of Gbs.

On the other hand, I have a feeling this may be the least bad,
generally-accessible means to backup a domestic machine, but does no one else feel there is a big hole in the market for a realistically-priced
backup solution for >20Gb, now that much larger disks than this are
commonplace? Backups don't seem to be something that PC and appliance
(e.g. Tivo) manufacturers consider for domestic consumption, but our
data isn't necessarily insignificant.

Cheers,

Bruno
