The latency was anything between 700ms to 7000ms - usually averaged
around 2500ms for my mate.

I looked seriously at this product. After much persistence I got through
to a senior level tech guy at BT who told me not to buy the service as
it "suffered from severe latency problems and other technical issues
which makes the service unreliable at best"
I wander if that call was monitored by BT and if he still has a job!!

Yup, I hadn't realised that that was the two-way deal of theirs when I
read it.

However given the problems you describe and the poor reliability, not to
mention the woeful backup I think I'll pass. ;)
