That's an idea. I do have mains right nearby - so some plug in X10
solution would also work - are there any?

You could adapt a keyfob remote maybe?  Someone here has turned on into an X10 doorbell.

Subject: [ukha_d] Detecting an open door

Having spent some of Sunday building a new front gate, I'd like to detect when
a person enters through it. The gate is next to the garage - both are a bit of a
walk from the house so I don't want to run wires, so any X10 powerline or RF
options?
