Oh, you wanted an automated solution? :-)
An X10 wireless PIR would at least detect someone near the gate - you could
angle it I suppose so that it only detected someone inside the gate rather
than passing on the road.
Really you need some sort of beam break or maybe magnetic contacts connected
to something.  Dunno if there are wireless available though, but PIR's yes.
