Re: BT Phone distribution

John,

as ever, there are several options available, and different people each
have
their preferences...

you could "parallel punch" the 3 wires from a BT socket onto a
group of
ports on your CAT5 patch panel in N0, then use standard CAT5 straight patch
cables to patch between "phone" sockets and the outlets...

Or you could make a seperate phone panel with a number of secondary BT
sockets adjacent to your RJ45 patch panel, then use BT-to-RJ45 patch cables
to patch phones to the outlets.

At the other end, you can either:

Cut the BT plug off the phone devices and crimp on an RJ45 instead and then
plug them straight into your CAT5 outlets.

or use an adapter to convert the RJ45 outlet back to a BT socket. these can
be bought off the shelf for about a fiver each. A cheaper way is buy some
el-cheapo BT extension leads (the kind you find on the market for a £1
each), cut them in half, and crimp an RJ45 plug on the bare ends. (this
gives you 2 patch cables per lead, - one going "each way")

In my case, I have made a seperate phone patchpanel as follows:

Master socket----------Secondary-----Secondary-----Secondary

the Master is a single outlet, each secondary is a dual outlet, giving a
total of 7 phone sockets. I further plan to mount a relay between the
master
and the secondaries to connect/disconnect the bell wire at will (as
discussed on the list earlier today). I have then used the DIY adapters
mentioned above to patch from the BT sockets into the CAT5 panel, and the
other half of the DIY adapter to convert back from RJ45 to BT socket at the
CAT5 faceplate.

I did it this way because:
a) I had most of the required parts lying around already.
b) It's much simpler from a wiring POV, as you don't have to deviate from
standard CAT5 punchdowns at your RJ45 patchpanel.

HTH
