I can think of uses for this, e.g. turn the hoover off when the
doorbell/phone rings.

Again I can think of examples, e.g. safety. An unattended iron that
is switched on is a fire risk. Having the house turn everything off
when noone is in or after a period of being on would help prevent
accidents.
