it part of the 'standards' that non-standard/unrecognised tags will just be
ignored?

is why you do

because early browsers will not recognise (and thus ignore) the
<SCRIPT></SCRIPT>
and
the actual code inside the tags is effectively commented
out?
This
should be the case with any browser and being so, does that not, de facto,
make
it correct?

And because IE doesn't choke on it it must surely be correct ;-p
