It's not completely clear from your description whether you have a
PABX in the chain? If you do, I would suspect the wiring of the
extension socket. The extension socket to the modem should be a
master socket, with a ringing capacitor, not a slave socket, and it's
possible that the original socket has gone defective. The fact that
one modem answers and the other does not when using the same socket
does not necessarily indicate that the socket is ok, since there are
two ways of detecting ringing from an electrical point of view with a
UK socket.
