RE: UK spec Audiotron Bulk Buy

Mark,

Obviously I am not unbiased here, but as I said at the time of the memory
bulk buy (where I made a loss of 1p per order because I don't know how much
a 1st class stamp is!), it should really matter not a jot if someone is
making a profit (and really, given the time invested by some people, I'm
sure it's not really a profit) or not - the fact is you have agreed to buy x
at price y.
Someone somewhere is always going to make a profit, so whether the bulk
buyer does or not should be irrelevant.

I thought the idea of these buys was to get a discount based on volume buys,
not that they were necessarily no profit ventures.
As you say, it would be hard to enforce such a thing anyway and may
discourage people from organising them.

There is a difference IMO between people occasionally organising a bulk buy
of items of potential interest to the group and someone spamming the group
with 'special offers' as has been done recently. Clearly with all the talk
of Rios and the interest I saw at the recent meet, there is interest in
these devices and thus it seemed reelvant.

When organising the US buy, I made it clear that I would offer an additional
service to convert the units to 220v and this would make me a small profit,
to help my IR35 status.  This still applies that I want to help said status.
I could have gone ahead with the US buy, or could have stuck to the US buy
price for the UK models and made an even bigger profit, but I did not
because that didn't seem right - this perhaps is also one of the things that
differentiates a bulk buyer from a normal dealer.

As it happens, considering my hourly rate (even now in the wake of all the
cuts in the IT contract market) and the time spent so far (let alone the
time to be spent), I would have made more by doing real work than by doing
this - so in effect I am making a loss anyway.

Sorry - I know this seems to be a response to a personal attack, when you
were not attacking this buy particularly, (or indeed attacking any buy for
that matter, just passing on an opinion), but it does bug me when people get
the hump about others trying to mak a living - so I'm not responding to you
Mark, just to whomever expressed that opinion.

Nobody is forcing anyone to take part in any bulk buy, and nothing is to
stop someone organising their own ones, so really I don't see why anyone
should have a problem.

I can forget the whole thing if it is deemed inappropriate to obtain a
discount _and_ make it worthwile going to the effort.

Tony
