Andy,

Yes this is generally correct for 99% of the time, the convention as a
general rule is to wire the live as red, the switched live (or return)
as the black and the earth, if needed. However, as I have discovered
over time many sparks seem not in the least bit interested in
convention!

If you are re-wiring from scratch it may be an idea to think about
putting in three-core cable, i.e. three plus earth as this gives you the
flexibility to chop and change things behind the scenes without ripping
up walls etc. Were I to re-wire for HA this is probably what I'd try to
do, whether it's acceptable practise or not is another matter! :/
