ok, confession time - I run my own record label=20
(strictly small time, one band at present, although we did=20
get a national rock mags single of the week last year...)

BIG problem with what you're proposing below is chart disqualification.

Ship all that extra stuff and your sales get banned from the chart numbers
and you don't get in the chart which means you get less airplay and less
press
and not on TOTP, and hence sell less records.

Hence major labels won't do it.

Might work for me though...

I make all my tracks available as MP3's as part of the deal with the
artist=

and we've sold quite a few more CD's and merchandise as a direct result.=20

Also, I'm thinking about making the sleeves available to be bought on their
own:
ie - you download the MP3's, burn to CDR and pay me =A31 (or so) to send
through a=20
CD sleeve so you get the original artwork too. I make cash off the sleeve
then.

And finally, I'm about to start selling advance copies of the next album=20
(due in the summer) through the website. It includes: free postage to your
door,=20
receiving the album before available in the shops, AND you get YOUR name in
the=20
sllevenotes of the CD. Not bad for =A310. Sell 200 up front and I've paid

the=20
recording time. Done deal.

any other ideas as to how I can make my artist improve on the current=20
Radio 1 play we've had to date appreciated.

1. Artist invents music
2. Artist gets followed around with a camcorder whilst recording music, and
to a live gig.
3. Record Company produces a pack with the videos on a CDROM, in a DVD box
which contains a pile of nice bumph including
-photos of band
-token redeemable for a T-shirt or some merchandise
as a collectible incentive, a small % of the packs would contain signed
pictures, or a gig ticket voucher, or even in the 2-3 copies worldwide, a
ticket to *meet* the band, and have a VIP day with them

Now, have say a total of thirty or so band photos, some of them rare, and
include only twelve or so in the box. have the website act as a swapping
forum, or sell the missing ones from your set...

Now, there's an incentive to buy the original, because you get a lot of HQ
bumph with it, and you build the artist's brand etc etc etc...

if RIAA et al did something like this, I would imagine a lot less piracy
problems for them!!

no mention of publishers cos with a few exceptions they are basically a
large loan
organistaion who give the artist lump sums in advance to live off in return
for 50% odd
of all future royalties (for no work)

this is an interesting one.

did you know that the RIAA (US music industry body) are being
questioned by Senate about the legalities of copy protecting audio CDs?

apparantely all the MP3 and CD duplication eqpt we buy has a percentage
of its sale cost taken by the RIAA to distribute to its members as
compensation for loss of CD sales (ie to pay the artists with)

The Senate see CD copy protection as a breach of this royalty agreement,

considering making it illegal to build in copy protection to CD's.

This will rumble on for ever, by which time a new format/compression
software'll make it all redundant anyway...
