I cheaper solution would be to use some sort of remote control software,
the
server  software, on your server in the utility room, and the client
software on your workstation in the living room.

There are lots out there, there is vnc (http://www.uk.research.att.com/)
which in my experience had a bit of lag, or TS (terminal services,
dpeneding
what os your server is running)
