Interlace reduces the period that any part of the screen is redrawn by half
So stops flicker

That's why they did it
The problems it causes in the broadcast industry is huge
but it was at the time the only way to overcome the flicker problem
The same became true with larger sets in recent times
Hence the 100hz tv to solve the problem
The fact that Digital TV followed so quickly again causing more problems
than it cured

As for High Def there are at present at least 5 different standards in
operation
3 of which broadcasters can buy in the UK
Remember Hi Def by the time it is broadcast in the states is not the Hi Def
you have heard people rave about
It looks as if the standard that will win will be the progressive scan for
recording but for TX My guess is they will stick to interlace to solve the
monitor problem
