Hi Ian,

I looked at the original UIR many moons ago but never did anything with it.

The sites you mention look to have some interesting stuff on there.

Looking at the "Improved" design a few things spring to mind.

1. The program the chip in circuit. Is this how you did it or do you also
have the means to program a PIC? If the hardware isnt working properly
there
is no way you would be able to program the chip.

2. It is powered from the serial port. Have you checked the voltages on the
board are correct. Some serial ports will not supply sufficient current to
power it. I seem to remember that power was a big problem witht he original
design but you can always add a wallwart PSU to power it (with a 5V
regulator of course).

3. What OS are you using? I guess Win2K or WinXP. Is the software
compatable
with those operating systems. Com Ports are funny things under NT/2K (dont
know about XP). Lots of software that runs fine under Win 9x will not work
on NT/2000.

Is any part of it working ?

Are there "sample" IR files for transmission. If so, look at the
unit with a
CCD camera and you will see the IR LED's flash.

HTH

Keith

I tried (and failed miserably) at building a UIRT (
http://people.a2000.nl/rwvgesse/FixFrame.htm?Uirt.htm
) few months back.

Now, with Quentin's post about the Lego Transciever, I had a look into
Girder, which looks like one awesome little bit of kit. I then found that
the Lego kit would need a custom driver DLL written in C, which ends the
story for me.. The thing is, these guys have taken the UIRT, and turned it
into something pretty smart. (
http://www.girder.nl/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=409&forum=3
for details)

As well as being able to record any *raw* IR stream and play it back at
will, it also has the capability to store up to four IR codes in PIC, and
react to these even if the PC is off. It's able to power the PC on when it
receives a specific IR Code..

The problem, and where I need help, is that I simply cannot find out what
is
wrong with my build. It's driving me nuts, I have checked, double checked,
triple checked, "Jenni" checked all the connections, and still
nothing!

The HA potential for this guys is (IMO) pretty amazing. It would be the
*core* of my HA setup, if I could just get it going...

Any Guru's interested?

Ian.
