Mark - some comments from their website seems to suggest that a Windows compatibility is possible (although technically beyond me)..............

"This program is more or less ANSI C. It should compile at least with a windows version of GCC. The only thing you need then is a RAW-DV to AVI converter. Since DV Type 1 AVI files are simple wrappers around RAW-DV this is an easy task. In trouble take a look at dvgrab which can write AVI files. Since Microsoft decided, that older versions of windows shouldn't be able to use firewire I decided that I shouldn't use windows anymore (and therefore don't want to write such a convertor in the near future...) I nevertheless accept and include patches that add windows support."

Personally I would love to use DV as a backup medium, even though using CDRW is still cheaper (but less convenient).  ~10Gb backup at 3.5 Mb/sec at a cost of ~ 12.5 pence per Mb compared to a CDR at ~ 6 pence per Mb.

Also these guys sell the cable, software etc needed to mod a DV in to be DV in and out - based in Surrey.

DV has gigs of space on the tape, and has firewire...

... however, if the firewire on a camcorder can be used for INPUT TO the
camera (as opposed to output from it), then the camera is classed by
Brussels as a videorecorder, and is charged duty at a much higher rate.

Because of this, most of the DV-cam manufacturers have deliberately
crippled the firewire interface to make it output only.... in many
cases, this is easily hackable, but it is another monkey to be careful
of if you're buying a camera.

Yeah...remember that one! :)

DV has gigs of space on a tape...it's digital...and has a
firewireinterface, sounds like great potential as a backup unit.
