It definitely can...

...but I do share Keiths hatred of Scart connectors ... the person who proposed its design should be shot.

It cant.

That is the beauty of SCART. If only they had chosed a decent plug such as a D25 it would be almost perfect.

Tim Morris has some limited info on a new standard that puts a DC offset onto one of the signals of S-Video but as yet I can find no info on this and I believe support for this is very limited.

Can anybody with a widescreen TV, DVD and Sky Digibox, connected via an amp (rather than direct scarts) tell me how the TV differentiates between an amorphic picture and a full-screen?

If that question makes no sense; I will try and explain. I have a normal 4:3 TV, and everything is set to 4:3 so I get letterbox pictures. Easy.

If I get a widescreen TV, then I want the higher resolution amorphic pictures. However, as all video runs through the amp, the widescreen signal on pin-8 (I think it is pin-8) will not make it to the TV. So how does the TV's widescreen autoswitch tell the difference between amorphic and full-screen?

I expect the answer to be: It can't, but I will ask the question anyway. If it is going to be a manual operation, then this is yet another thing to confuse SHMBO. Doh.
