Gotta disagree with you a little on a couple of things mate...

I understand that there's a (roughly =A330) gizmo that plugs into the
serial port on the TiVo to control the NTL boxes ... Can't remember
where it comes from though

TiVo doesn't necessarily win ... TiVo throws up a dialogue saying that
it wants to change channels in two minutes time and then you have two
minutes to say no (otherwise it assumes that you're not actually
watching it at the time).
