One thing to be aware of.....

....at least with Win2K.

Ensure that you plug the ComPort adapter into the SAME USB port each time.
For some reason Win2K will insist on installing the same physical adapter to
a different ComPort number even if the port you originally installed it to
is free.

I had a PC that had previously had a USB adapter installed and had been
allocated to COM3. My adapter got installed as COM4. The software on the PC
could only use COM3 and Win2K told me that COM3 was already in use even
though Device Mangler showed only COM1,2 and my newly installed COM4.

Searching the registry revealed the presence of the previous USB adapter but
I could not uninstall it as according to device manager it didnt exist!

Win2K WILL allow you to grab the COM port number back though.

One other thing to beware of is software that only allows you select COM1-4
or COM1-8 as you can allocate any number upto COM256 under Win2K

Does anyone know how many USB to serial converters you can connect to a
PC.
Also are there any shortcomings with USB converters as opposed to adding
PCI serial cards.

Thanks
