Apart from that fact that it will take me about 2 weeks to mp3 the
whole
collection and I would rather not have to do it again

I may have lost the plot here - but if you are ripping your cd's to MP3
then surely the original CD would make a reasonable backup :-)
Or do you not have the original cd ;-)
