RE: MP3 Backup

Glenn,

Ummm, that is a thought that I had not considered. I may need to do some playing around with my pc and Dennon reciever. Stupidly I had not
thought of that!

My only other issue is that fact that you buy a CD for =A310 and only ever<= BR> use it once. It is still nice to handle the goods that you have bought.
I am sure that others will agree?

Ben - Off to play with PC, reciever and digital connections!!!

Ben,

With the abundant availability of S/PDIF digital out soundcards (and I
don't mean the SBLive, but that would do in a pinch) the digital bits
are going to get to the digital input on my system the same as if they
had been read off a CD and piped though a digital out of my CD player
and into the system.  My own linn kivor for a 12th of the price, and I=
can build my own interfaces if I want. ;-)

But I agree in general... most people I have seen using their computers
for a jukebox are using analog outputs.  It is damn near impossible to=
have a good quality DA converter built into such a small, RFI-ridden
location.  In those cases, the benefits of a lossless compression sche= me
are nill.

Glenn

My thoughts on this are as follows, mp3 will be used for the following

background music
piping around the house
Portable music (Apple ipod and mp3 CD players)

Our serious listening will happen through a good CD player and hifi
system and not from a PC that does not have the audio quality of the
hifi (hopefully soon to be a new linn system!)

When a lossless hifi quality method of storing cd's that does not cost
=A312000 (linn kivor) comes along then I will go for that.

Just my thoughts on the mp3 situation.

Cheers

Ben

Just a thought:

Why, in this day and age when hard drive space is so relatively cheap,
wouldn't you want to use a lossless compression algorithm like FLAK or
SHIN instead of a loss one like MP3?

I guess I still don't like the idea of a computer program deciding what
I can and cannot hear... I want it all!

I'm in the process of doing the same thing, only using EACH, FLAK, and a couple of IDA tag programs I wrote in VB...

Hi All

Now that I have got a DDAR I have started the long task to mp3ing 350
CD's and this is obvisouly going to run to about 20 Gig. Just wondering
what other users of largeish mps collection do for backup. I can use the DVD writer on my imac for the moment but that will soon become a pain.

What do people do?

Cheers

Ben
