Tony,
It seems that your main problem in your scenario is how to detect wheather your SWMBO is really in bed or not. You are trying to use all kinds of logic like whether she turned off the bedside switch etc.
Why you don't simply use pressure mat and put it under the matress or sheet (like http://www.letsautomate.com/10056.cfm?CFID=67097&CFTOKEN=4528584). Ore use some proximity sensor, like in sensor switches (www.sensor.co.uk). That way you'll know for sure that she's in bed and you'll need no logic and other clues to make a conclusion.

This is what I am trying to solve - let things be automated AND manual at
the same time - without resorting to momentary switches and mass re-wiring.

It's the m25 mate - I'm stuck on it and when I do get going, I end up going
round in circles :-D
