RE: Wireless Access Points



I recently went though the same exercise as I need to sort out wireless access over a relatively large site.

 

I ended up (with lots of advice and assistance (thanks MH) from here):

 

Alcatel 510 DSL router (not necessary in your case)

2xWAP11

1x Linksys EZXS88W 8 port switch

 

A couple of things to note:

 

When siting access point height is your friend, but there is a null zone immediately above and below the AP UNLESS you turn one of the antennas sideways.

 

RF HATES RSJs. If you have one, it will seem to suck up any signal in the vicinity. Avoid placing your AP anywhere near one.

 

There’s lots more, just use common sense.

I didn't know you could do that, useful, but I do have a SMC Barricade 7004ABR router connected to my cable modem, and have my server on the LAN, so I would need to look at either an access point or replacing the router with a wireless model.
