I know SMS is a recurring topic here, but I've not seen this angle covered
before.

To provide bi-directional sms (ie ability to reply/send to the house and
action from that) I've seen people hook up mobiles to a serial port and work
with those.  Done that, had the problems, batteries, chargers, dodgy
software and the like.

Has anyone had experience of these wireless modems and tools like smslink
(http://www.styx.demon.co.uk/smslink/)? the software is a linux tool working
directly to the serial port to send and receive sms data (also cool things
like sms email, and email sms... but anyway) an the "modem" is a robust
looking box with a proper mains psu and sensible construction.  I've seen
the Wavecom (WM02) around for a couple of hundred, i'm guessing there is one
box available on contract for less?

The messages can then action things via almost anything from shooting out
emails, some perl sticky tape or whatever to drive the house.

If anyone has any experience, I'd be interested, otherwise I'll probably
jump in.
