On the 4 MHz version yes, it is a hardware limitation. If I can
possibly
avoid moving to a faster PIC for this app I will as it is all timer
oriented
and would mean a lot of extra work.

Maybe around a quid fifty. The most expensive from RS is about 4 quid.
