A hub simply sends all packets to every port, whereas a switch
intelligently routes packets by mac address. The advantage is that you
get potentially more bandwidth for each machine (unless of course
everything goes back and forth to the same server in which case you
still have everything going down the same bit of wire)

A switch shouldn't be any more reliable, unless of course you have a
broken hub.
