Could be a dry joint or an electrolytic capacitor drying out.
 
When capacitors age they dont always conduct electricity as they should unless there is more than a certain level of signal. This can also happen with tarnished connections. Try swapping the input signals and see if it moves to the other channel.
 
Also try driving the amp at a higher level temporarily and see if you get a consistant sound quality which then breaks up again if you drop to a lower level.

The amp I use for my HA announcements over ceiling speakers has suddenly
started producinf "static crackle" over the left channel.  It is def the
amp, cause if I swap the left and right speakers over, the crackle apears on
the othe speaker.

Any ideas, or is the amp f***ked??
