Got to agree here big time. Most importantly for me it depends on
where/what you are going to replay your songs on. I had a Rio 300 and a
Rio 500 for many years - these devices would only support MP3 - So the
choice was pretty straight forward. As I had a 64Mb Rio and 64Mb card -
that left me with 128Mb of music for the day, so space becomes very
important. I ripped the same song at differing bit rates and tested.
Eventually I settled on 128Kbps.

The software suite I used was dictated by how I got music onto the
device.

Nowadays music gets listened to on the iPAQ during the day and Rio
Receiver at home. As space is still very important to me on the iPAQ, I
have stuck to 128Kbps, but moved to WMA files as Windows Media Player
was the easiest way to transfer files. I do think the WMA is better than
MP3 at 128Kbps.

Next thing to consider is how do you listen to music - in other words do
you like a mixed up bunch of songs, or do you listen on a album basis.
The software you use will have differing support for playlists etc
between MP3 and WMA. Tag and Rename does not support WMA. Although the
media library Management Wizard supplied with the Windows XP Media
Player Bonus pack can be used.

Loads to think about - Do some tests yourself, understand if the set of
tools does the job for you, and then rip away.

Eric
