I've seen that Sony are doing something along these lines with one of
their audio lines. See

And not silly money either. Just wait for one of the cable companies
to bring out a 100 quid firewire cable ("...for enhanced highs, lows
and Hi Fi mag BS...")

Since everything's stored digitally these days it's the way to go.
