The security system powers on with the battery connected only, so it looks
like the battery is ok, no difference if I try with just the battery, just
the mains, or battery and mains. Thanks for the suggestion.... Any other
ideas ?

I seem to remember something about the battery needing to be connected for
the security system to work (including being in the 'off' state), could it
be that the battery is actually knackered after completely discharging?
