Campbell,
The testers check for connection integrity across the pairs, so effectively
checking the continuity of the installed cable.
The beauty of some testers is that they can be used on their own with a
terminator unit to check single CAT5 runs, therefore eliminating the need
to
patch across a pair of CAT5's.
The problem I guess is that if there is a problem on the cables with the
method you describe, is that if one of the installed cables has a problem
with one core, how do you find which cable it's on easily?
I used a CAT5 tester Thursday just to check a single port, working a
telephone extension, (Which was working) and found that one of the pairs
unused by the phone application had a problem. With this tester I managed
to
sort it out in a couple of minutes.
HTH

Forgive my ignorance, but can someone simply explain the working of the
testers... I tend to test two lines at once by putting a patch cable at one
end linking the two sockets and at the patch panel use two cables to a
spare
double socket, then simplty use a multimeter to check continuity.. Will a
tester check losses etc on the cable, or just make life easier.
