WRT the comments by both John and Phil about Usenet giving
accessibility t unsavoury groups, IMO this is a potential problem
with the internet in general. Nothing against your own personal
preferences but the potential for abuse did seem an odd argument t
raise so I wondered about it some.

Do both of you not use Usenet at all t attempt t avoid these
issues?

IMO, it is far easier for an inexperienced partner or the kids t
type www.sex.com or merely come across unsavoury items while browsing
sites supported by advertising than t navigate and subscribe to a
Usenet group while it would also be obvious on the next trip t the
computer that this had happened. Usenet programs generally also allow
the locking of the subscription list with a password which stops
anyone but the person with the password subscribing to any other
groups.

Secondly, most Usenet programs allow the saving/archiving of messages
downloaded from newsgroups which is one of your suggested advantages
for the mailing list that I agree with but do not see as a problem in
Usenet.

Finally, Usenet posts are archived by a number of services such as
google (was deja) which long term gives a better protection t the
knowledge base than this group which could lose it's archive t morrow
if Yahoo folded.

Anyway, I respect your opinions and do not want to argue, just
wondered about a few things.

In the event that a newsgroup is created, I would like to investigate
alternative methods t propgate content t those people who are
completely against Usenet maybe by echoing messages from/t the list.
I think an Audiotron group have setup something similar t this with
their forums which can echo to and read from c.h.a. and I know of
another group which run a combined news server/forum system. It
should not be to much of a problem to create an equivalent system t
have a mailing list/usenet feed but until/unless we got the
newsgroup, it is obviously not an immediate need.

Mark.
