Mine suffered this trait at first (bought mine in May 1999 which makes me
an
early adopter of DTT) but replacing the aerial and downlead helped
enormously.

AIUI the Wide button switches between 4:3 and 16:9 LB on a 4:3 TV set.  If
you've set your TV as 16:9 then this button has no effect.  It may also
enable down conversion on non-anamorphic 4:3 sets.
