I remember a good few years ago messing with an inductor (not understanding
what they did) - dc voltage from a battery is not a good thing to apply to
it - as when you disconnect the magnetic field collapses and you get a good
jolt - enough to light a neon indicator briefly.

Haven't been zapped in the last few years though despite doing a lot of
mains wiring.  Guess that reading the 16th Ed Wiring Regs makes you think
twice about replacing that blown 3A fuse with either a 13A ('cos that's the
only one you can find) or a bit of foil.
