I use a package called "FlashGet" (http://www.amazesoft.com/) -
Unfortunate
name for us Brits but it is an American product !!

It speeds things up considerably as it splits the file into up to five
streams and downloads them in parallel. This helps if you have a fast
internet connection such as ISDN or Cable Modem but is also helps on a
standard dial up.
