There was a system that did this at the CEDIA expo in the States last year.
As I understand things, it had the "is anyone there, what's the time,
what's the temperature at the moment, etc, etc" sensing, and a manual
user interface that basically was an up control and a down control.

It then used "learning" technology to develop a rulebase.

Quite funky, but not cheap ;-)
