Isn't this called the Westinghouse effect? An early management consultant
type experiment in the 1920s(?) to investigate how to improve productivity
of workers in a factory. Something like they changed the orientation of the
lights by 90 degrees to see whether glare from the lights slowed workers
down. Productivity went up 10%. Over a period of time, productivity dropped
back to its previous level. They changed the lights back to their original
position. Productivity went back up 10%.
They repeated this a couple of times until they released that just by being
seen to do something, people perceived the situation to be 'better'.
Hence sticking an audio cassette in the freezer then listening to a CD
makes
you think that you've improved the situation, so you convince yourself it
sounds better. I think I might try freezing my directional speaker wires
;-)
