Can you get cron (the Unix scheduler) for Windows?  It would probably be a
useful scheduler for this kind of thing.

That's very interesting.  Everyone else I speak to seems to be able to MP3
encode CDs several times faster than real time, but mine, like yours, takes
several times the CD duration to encode (which is what the bladenc docs
suggest).  Any idea why?
