That, of course, is exactly the other primary function they perform in Star
Trek....

Oh, and in ST, they also have a Salium Krellide power cell which is
sufficient to power the unit for 5 years (R U listening Duracell?), and
they
also have a dermal sensor so the badge knows when it is being worn (and by
whom), and can optionally be coded to only work for the individual to which
it is assigned!

OK, OK, go on - tell me I'm sad!
