thanks for the reply, much appreciated.  I'm trying a few other places for
the TSOP or similar today, but New Zealand tends to be about 10 years
behind
the world with things like this. one more thing.. what voltage is the 680R
resistor??

and can the 2k resistor on the receiver board be replaced with either a 1.8
or 2.2k???

No.

thats not the sma thing at all.

The TSOP is a complete decoder - 3 legs - +5v 0v output
what you point at is just the IR sensor part and requires a decoder chip.

I can supply the TSOP if you wish although I will have to look at the costs
of sending to New Zealand.
