More details. Apologies for the noise - shout if people aren't interested.
Webpad uses the RangeLAN2 or Symphony RF ethernet device, from
http://www.proxim.com. This uses the
OpenAir protocol over 2.4GHz and is
billed as an alternative to the 802.11 standard. Proxim make the full range
of PCMCIA cards etc, so it could form the basis of a wireless network.
PCPro reviewed the Proxim Symphony base station in issue 59 and thought it
was pretty good. The price they give for the base station in the UK is
=A3268+VAT, and it runs over the same 2.4GHz frequency as the US listed
product for the WebPad.
Their FAQ goes on to say "Microsoft chose Proxim as the only Wireless
LAN
driver to be built-in to Windows CE Professional Edition (Windows CE
2.11).This means that when you choose from any of the wide variety of
Windows CE devices available, you can be up and running wirefree within
minutes." - suggesting that perhaps something like an iPaq could also
be
persuaded to do wireless web browsing - if anyone with an iPaq is still
reading at this point - do you know whether this is likely to be possible.
An iPaq would make quite a nice portable remote control for the house ;-)
HTH,
Ray Barnett.
