Phil,

Electric fences are designed to shock and not kill (usually). The feel
of a shock increases with voltage. The Van Der Graf generator  (no
references to 70s not quite supergroups please) will generate a terrific
shock with virtually no current.

Lots of electic fences are run off car batteries (low voltage, bags of
current). They use a circuit to charge a capacitor to a very high
voltage and this then discharges periodically down the wire (hence the
pulse.)

Normal AC is different.

BTW (code for not an excuse to start another thread)

The reason that electicity is generated in three phases is that
generators rotate and if you generate a lot of electricity in a single
phase you end up with an oscillating load on the generator shaft (not
good for a long life). Three phases smooths this out so the generator
sets last longer and are more efficient (not that generating electricity
from mechanical energy is particularly effiecient.)

As I understand things, the reason people tend to surive normal 230v AC
shocks is that every 100th of a second, the PD between the bit of their
body connected to the mains drops to zero volts relative to the bit
touching the earth.

Isn't that why electric fences pulse on and off, instead of being a
steady current?
